COME WITH US TO THE PLACES OF THE GAME OF THRONES (part two)

WHERE WAS GAME OF THRONES FILMED?

Last week we began our virtual tour to the places where the successful series Game of Thrones was filmed. This fascinating journey started in Croatia and in Northern Ireland.
We visited the places of King’s Landing and Winterfell. Today, we continue our itinerary flying to Iceland, to the camp of Wildlings. Then, we will head south to Malta, intriguing Morocco, Spain and to the Lands of Dorne, passing by Scotland and the Castle of Doune.

Fasten your seat belts, let’s go: Have a nice trip together with That Aviation Italia!

Iceland

We already had the opportunity to speak extensively about Iceland in our previous article as one of the favourite destinations for the business incentives organization.
Because it is a mid-range destination it requires only four hours and fifteen-minute flight from Milan, and it is easily reachable both with commercial and charter flights. Services and accommodation facilities are modern and efficient but, above all, nature and the landscapes are truly incredible.
What setting could be better for the camp of the Wildlings?
There is an area near the Grjótagjá quarry (used as a set for some scenes with JonSnow and Ygritte) Lake Myvatn that Icelandic popular beliefs indicate as the refuge of “troll assassins” and a place connected to hell and to Satan. This area is Dimmuborgir.

In Game of Thrones, Dimmuborgir is the place where Mance Rayder mounts his campsite.

And, in Iceland, the scenes of the North of the Wall and the Mountains of Frostfangs are also set. The first ones at Vatnajökull, where the largest glacier in Europe is located, and the latter between Höfðabrekka and Vík í Mýrdalur, in southern Iceland, where some scenes of the dangerous mountain range of the Fangs were shot.
The Pingvellir National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was widely used as a set for the fourth season of the series and is shown in all its glory in the scenes of the journey to the lands of Westeros of Arya and Sandor Clegane.

Malta

We have also spoken about Malta in a previous article, as a favorite destination for incentive trips. And the motivations are easy to understand – it is a fascinating place, rich in history (just think of the Knights of the Order of Malta), with an ideal climate, turquoise waters, a modern airport and high-quality services.
In the first season of Game of Thrones, Malta was used as a set for the scenes related to King’s Landing.

What locations were used?

The monumental Mdina and San Anton Palace (Red Keep), the Fort St. Angelo (The secrets of Red Keep) and Fort Manoel, just to name a few …

Do you remember the scene in which Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel investigate on the attack on Bran Stark and ride through the beautiful door of Mdina?

And the door of the Red Keep of King’s Landing from the first season?

It is Fort Ricasoli: a fortress from the seventeenth century located on the promontory of Gallows Point. It is a historical place of great importance, severely damaged during the Second World War, that was used as a location not only in Game of Thrones but also in Agora, Troy, Gladiator, Helen of Troy and Julius Caesar.

Where was the wedding scene of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo filmed?

In Azure Window – a very popular location on the island of Gozo, near the Bay of Dwejra, which with its natural stone arch of 50 meters, was the ideal setting for both Game of Thrones and for films like Fury of the Titans, the Count Montecristo, and the television miniseries Odyssey.

Malta is poor in green areas but if you want a place to walk among the trees on your tour, you can visit the splendid Buskett Gardens. But what does Game of Thrones have to do with it? Simple, it is the house of Illyrio Mopatis, and it is there that Daenerys and Viserys met Khal Drogo and his khalassar before marrying.

Were you fascinated by the Maltese archipelago and by the many films that were shot there?

Morocco
We continue our tour on the locations of Game of Thrones and now we arrive in Morocco, a country to be discovered and which is loved by incentive houses for its charm, flexibility and the ability to respond to specific requests for the organization of a high-level team building.

It is also very appreciated by tourists for the richness of its proposals: sun, history, beauty of nature. And guess what? It is also much loved by the cinema professionals.

In Ouarzazate, in fact, there is the Atlas Corporation Studios one of the largest film studios in the world.

Many films were filmed here, but in the Game of Thrones this is the location of the lands of Essos, of Slaver’s Bay and the Free Cities of Yunkai, Astapor and Pentos.
Fly towards Marrakech and move about 100 km towards Aït-Ben-Haddou and you will find yourself in Yunkai, the smallest of the cities of Slaver’s Bay and of Pentos, the largest of the Free Cities.

What other films were shot in this location?
The list is long, and we will indicate you just a few: Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth, Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander the Great, Babel, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and many, many others.

That Aviation Italia organized numerous charters flights for corporate events, including large incentives in Morocco, and can confirm the high quality of the offered services.

Scotland
Also Scotland, like Northern Ireland, was one of the places chosen for the settings of Game of Thrones: Great Britain really was a great inspiration for the most beloved TV series of all times!

And in Scotland, the production of Game of Thrones was attracted by the Doune Castle. Here was also filmed the pilot episode of the series and some scenes of the House Stark in Winterfell. But it is not the only set that was established here, because it was the location chosen for several other films and series such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Spain
Spain concludes our journey to the discovery of the most evocative locations, chosen for the Game of Thrones.

What about Spain?

It is really very difficult to describe it in a few lines, also because it has a very large surface with very different landscapes.
And even the cities, habits and culture are very different from one area to another. Certainly, it turned out to be a perfect setting for some memorable scenes from the Game of Thrones.

Nowhere in the world could have been represented the water gardens of the Kingdom of Dorne   if not in the marvelous Alcázar of Seville.  We were fortunate to visit it in person and we assure you that it is really wonderful: it leaves you breathless!

The production of Game of Thrones turned it into the private residence of Martell Palace – the governors of Dorne.

But Seville was also set for the Meereen Arena – the Plaza de Toros in Osuna – in the scene that has the largest number of extras in the whole series and also the most expensive.

From Seville we will move to Cordova to admire the Roman Bridge which in Game of Thrones is the Bridge of Volantis that crosses river Rhoyne, one of the main rivers of the Eastern Continent.
The bridge is 247 meters long and 9 meters wide and the impact is truly spectacular. But, to make it look even longer and more suggestive, the filming was done with the help of drones and multiple cameras.

Our journey ends here. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, with this virtual tour to the discovery of the locations used for the filming of your favourite series, you will surely have retraced with us the narrated events and recognized and connected the places of which we have spoken.
We hope to have been able to bring back memories of some of the scenes of the various seasons and to have given some original ideas for a future holiday or for the organization of incentive theme trips and DMC, a bit more different from the usual.

Let us suggest you: you choose the right location and That Aviation Italia will take care of the organization of the charter flights!
